What is space clearing?

Space clearing is the art of clearing and revitalizing energies in buildings.

All traditional cultures have a form of space clearing. It’s a higher level of house cleaning and is as essential to the energetic maintenance of a place as physical cleaning is to physical maintenance.

The term “space clearing” has passed into the English language as a generic term for all kinds of energy clearing techniques, but originally it was the name I coined to describe the ceremony I started developing in 1978. All the information on this website refers specifically to that ceremony and how we have developed it since then. It involves specific techniques, such as clapping and belling, and it is the only space clearing method I can guarantee the effectiveness of.

Why space clearing is necessary

If you’ve ever had the experience of walking into a room just after there has just been an argument, you know that you can literally feel it hanging in the air. People sometimes say, “you could have cut the air with a knife”, meaning that the astral frequency of the argument was so raw and dense that they could tangibly feel it in the room, even after the people who were engaged in the quarrel had left.

Everything that happens in a room creates energetic ripples in the space, similar to the effect of a stone being dropped in a pond. The imprints of this are then recorded in the walls, floor, ceiling, furniture, and objects in the space, and will remain there, layer upon layer, unless they are cleared. Repetitive actions and behaviours get deeply imprinted. Events accompanied by strong emotions or trauma are the most strongly imprinted of all.

We all create a certain amount of etheric debris on a daily basis too. This leaves a stagnant residue in your home, in the same way as everyday living creates cleaning and tidying on a physical level. The reason this is a problem is because you are energetically connected to your home and all your belongings. When stagnant energies are allowed to build up, they cause a corresponding stagnation in some aspects of your life that will make you feel stuck.

Space clearing can clear astral imprints and revitalize the stagnant energies in your home to get your life moving again. The changes it can bring about, especially when combined with clutter clearing, are remarkable.

Who needs space clearing?

Everyone. All buildings, and their occupants, can benefit from regular space clearing. Many people now choose to make space clearing part of their regular building maintenance programme so that their space is energetically as well as physically clean and clear.

How often does space clearing need to be done?

It’s best to space clear your home at least once a year, or sooner than that if you have a major life change such as starting or ending a relationship or starting a new career.

Professional space clearing

Anyone who is fit and healthy can learn to do Basic Space Clearing in their own home.

The training to learn to clear other people’s homes, as a professional space clearer, is much more challenging. A prerequisite for the students who train with us is to have spent several years developing their subtle body structures and energetic perception. The professional training currently consists of approximately 300 hours of tuition and there is no guarantee of certification at the end unless the trainee is consistently able to achieve the high standard required. This is why there are now hundreds of feng shui consultants in the West but only a handful of certified space clearing practitioners.

If you search the internet for space clearers, you’ll find many who claim to have been trained by Richard and me but have in fact only read one of our books or attended a weekend workshop. There are also some who did indeed take our training years ago but were not able to complete it. Or they did complete it but have not been able to maintain their skills by completing our Continuing Professional Development program each year.

If person’s name does not appear in our International Directory of Practitioners,  they will be offering a very different standard or type of space clearing to the currently certified practitioners we have personally trained to such a high level.

The difference between space clearing and feng shui

For your life to work well, it is vital to have a good flow of clear, vibrant energy in your home and workplace. Feng shui is a beautifully organized system of knowledge that allows us to design buildings to maximize the beneficial flows of energy around us by improving building design, furniture placement, colour schemes, and so on. It is based on having an understanding of the essential qualities of chi, and how to keep it fresh and vital through balancing the elements of nature in our environment.

The Chinese name “feng shui” describes the system that is best known in the West and most easily transposes to the western way of life, but most traditional cultures have their own form of feng shui that they have used for thousands of years. Traditional systems do not take account of the harmful effects of electromagnetic fields that are so prevalent in our homes today and usually do not include checking for geopathic stress before positioning key items of furniture such as beds, desks, sofas, and chairs. Some modern systems of feng shui have also have become entangled with local superstitions or New Age add-ons. However, the core principles have stood the test of time and are the same today as those formulated and practiced in ancient times.

Very few western buildings are so well designed that there are no areas where energy gets stuck. Most are conceived without any thought being given to the way energy can flow around them, and awkwardly positioned furniture can then add to the problems. How much stuck energy builds up depends on the overall feng shui of a place and the activities of the people who occupy it. Feng shui always works better and faster when done in conjunction with space clearing, and space clearers are often called in to help where a feng shui professional has done all they can do but the situation still hasn’t improved or hasn’t improved enough.

The difference between space clearing and clutter clearing

Clutter clearing is one of the recommended steps to prepare for a space clearing ceremony. It can also be done by itself, with no intention of doing the ceremony or even knowledge that such a ceremony exists. It primarily involves clearing physical objects from a space, and there are also deeper levels that address mental, emotional, and spiritual types of clutter. People generally begin with physical level clutter clearing and then progress to the other less tangible but equally important types.

How to do space clearing

My first book about space clearing (Creating Sacred Space with Feng Shui) was published in 1996 and sold over one million copies in 15 languages.

I explained in that book how to do space clearing according to the methods I was using at that time. There have been so many developments since then that the book has now been allowed to go out of print and has been replaced by two new books that Richard and I co-authored and published in 2024.

Space Clearing, Volume 1
The art of clearing and revitalizing energies in buildings

Everything you need to know about how to do space clearing in your own home and the homes of close friends and relatives.

Space Clearing, Volume 2
How space clearing works

Deeper understandings of how space clearing works and the many ways it can be used to improve your quality of life.
